Ibat-ibang opinyon kung sino ang unang gumamit ng ekspresyon na ito.  Subalit, sa aking pagkakaalam madalas itong binabanggit ng mga artista sa telebisyon.  Ito ay ginagawang ekspresyon sa mga noon time show.  Ginagamit sa pagpapatawa hanggang sa lumaganap na parang epidemya.  Kasabay din ng pagsikat ay paglaganap ng ibat ibang memes sa social media na talaga namang patok sa kabataan.  

Sa unang tingin ang "Eh di wow" ay tila sagot pagkamangha.  Ngunit ang salitang ito ay madalas pagtugon na pabalang. Negatibong pagsagot sa kausap.  Hindi pagkamangha kundi di pagsangayon sa kausap.  Ito ay may double-sided na kahulugan.  Madalas makakarinig ka nito sa mga magbabarkada na naguusap.  Minsan usapan sa chat at comment area ng facebook.  Hindi din papahuli ang mga kabataang sampung taong gulang pababa.  Kung karamihan sa kabataan ay kinagigiliwan ang paggamit ng ekspresyon, nababahala naman ang karamihan sa mga magulang sa magiging epekto nito sa paguugali ng kanilang mga anak.  Maraming magulang ang dismayado dahil unti unting nawawala na ang pagiging magalang ng mga anak. 

Kung ako ang tatanungin, ang ekspresyon ay parte ng ebolusyon ng pagkatao.  Produkto ng mga taong malawak ang imahinasyon.  Ito may adbentahe sa paglinang ng kultura ng bansa.  Sa kabilang banda ang paggamit ng ekspresyon ay madalas panlipas oras lamang.  Madami ang gumugamit at sumasabay sa uso.  Ngunit, pagkalipas ng ilang taon ay unti unting nawawala.  Pwede din naman na napapasa sa makabagong henerasyon o di kaya'y napapagusapan lamang kung kasikatan pa.  Tingnan niyo ngayon dahil hindi na masyadong ginagamit sa telebisyon unti untin na ring naglalaho.

Halos lahat ng tao dumaan sa sitwasyon na gipit sa pera kaya gumagawa ng paraan para masolusyunan ang kakulangan sa pinansyal.  Ang isa sa pinakamabilis na solusyon ay ang pagutang sa kaibigan, kamaganak, kakilala o minsan sa bangko. 

Maraming uri ng mangungutang. May nagpapanggap na palakaibigan.  Kakaibiganin ka muna  hanggang sa makuha ang iyong tiwala. Ikaw naman na walang kamalay malay nagtiwala at kinaibigan mo naman. May magaling umarte na mangungutang.  Best actor sa kadramahan.  Ang drama niya idadaan sa paiyak iyak.  Meron din mangungutang na akala mo maamong tupa. Maganda ang postura: maganda at gwapo hindi mo akalain na kapalmuks pala.  May magagaling din magsalita at papaikutin at hanggang sa mabibilog ka. 

Mangangako itong kapalmuks na mangungutang na ito.  Sasabihin sa sahod ka bayaran.  Sasabihin pa sayo sigurado yun babayaran ka.  Nagigipit lang daw siya kaya siya mangungutang.  Ang hindi mo alam ganun din ang pala ang mga buladas niya sa kanyang dating inutangan.  Nakasanayan na talaga niya mangungutang hanggang sa nagkapatong-patong na mga utang niya.

Nakakwentuhan ko ang aking kapitbahay at napagusapan namin ang pagtulong. Si Ate mel ay isang matulunging babae. Nakapagaral siya dahil siya din ay natulungan ng kanyang tiyahin. Nakapagtapos si Ate Mel ng kursong accountancy. Pumasa at nagkaroon ng magandang trabaho. Noong early '90s si Ate Mel ay sumasahod na ng mahigit 20 mil, hindi pa kasama ang kanyang mga incentives at bunos. Sa madaling salita nakakaluwag si Ate Mel sa buhay. Si Ate Mel ang tipo ng babaeng hindi nakikipagaway. Matagal ko ng kapitbahay si Ate Mel ni minsan hindi kami nagkaaway at nakasagutan. Masasabi kong napakabait talaga niya. Siya na talaga ang pinakamartir. Hindi marunong magalit. Bihira lang ang taong ganito.

Dahil nakakaluwag siya sa buhay noong dekada 90 hanggang taong 2010 siya ang sandalan ng kanyang mga pamangkin at pinsan sa kanilang pagaaral. Literal na siya ang gumagastos lahat-lahat sa kanilang pagaaral. Si Ate Mel pa mismo ang nagkukusang nagpapaalala ng kanilang allowance. Halos walang natira kay Ate Mel dahil ang sabi niya nagiinvest siya in the future. Iniisip niya na tutulungan din siya ng mga pinapaaral niya pagmagigipit siya at matutulungan din ang kanyang anak sa pagaaral sa kolehiya.

May mga naipundar na gamit si ate Mel. May house and lot. Meron sasakyan at iba pang kasangkapan sa bahay. Ang masakit na katutuhan ay wala siyang ipon. Hindi niya naisip na magtabi. Wala akong ibang masabi kundi ang palakasin siya. Sabi ko lahat ng pagtulong niya ay may gantimpala sa taas.

Malaking aral sa akin ang mga naririnig ko kay ate Mel. Ako din ay produkto ng aking mga kapatid. Dahil sa kanila ako ay nakatapos sa aking pagaaral sa kolehiyo. When she tries to remember this experience, she cannot stop herself from laughing. This is a story about one of my friend Tess's most embarrassing moments. Tess hails from Quezon Province in the southern part of Luzon, and she found a job as a factory worker in Manila.

Her embarrassing ordeal took place at a Jollibee fast-food restaurant. Her housemates asked her to pick up some food from there, and despite the rain, Tess agreed, eager to experience the famous eatery for herself. Arriving at the store with her feet and sandals covered in mud, she worried the guard wouldn't let her in. So, she took off her sandals and left them by the entrance before joining the line to order.

As Tess waited, she noticed people staring at her bare feet, but she tried to ignore them, feeling deeply embarrassed inside. When she finally got her order, she hurriedly grabbed her sandals and left. Later, she realized it was perfectly fine to wear sandals inside the store.

Tess kept this embarrassing incident to herself for three years before she felt comfortable enough to share it with me and her other friends.

Back in the old days and up to now, everyone had Shredder in their kitchen. These were important for getting the tasty coconut flesh out of the hard shell. There were different types, some even made by carpenters like my neighbor.

My neighbor made his own coconut shredder using a Y-shaped branch from a tree. Here's how he did it:
  1. He found a branch shaped like a Y and cut it to make a flat base.
  2. He used a tool called a chisel to make the branch flat.
  3. Then, he made two legs to keep the shredder steady.
The most important part of the shredder is the teeth that crush the coconut. My neighbor made these from metal rods:

  1. He heated the metal until it was red hot.
  2. Then, he hammered the ends flat to make them like circles.
  3. He made small sharp points around the circles for shredding.
  4. He stuck the other end of the metal rods into the base of the shredder.
Once the shredder was ready, you could use it to crush the coconut by moving it up and down. It was hard work, but it got the job done and gave us delicious coconut flesh for cooking.

Let's go back to the summer of  1992, when my childhood friends were playing hide in our favorite playing ground, in the street near our houses. I got caught early in the game with my friend, so we waited at the home base while the others kept playing. 

Two friends who didn't join the game brought tuba-tuba and had already eaten some. Curious about what they brought, I joined them.  I remembered seeing tuba-tuba before but didn't know it was edible. When I saw some friends eating it, in a slip of a tongue I told them it was edible. I was not really sure about it. Everyone was joining picked tuba-tuba in our neighbor's yard that we thought were fruits.  

We couldn't resist trying them, so my friend picked one of the brown seeds and cracked it open. It looked like peanuts inside, so we both started eating them. We had no idea that those seeds were dangerous.

After a while, some of our friends started feeling dizzy and sick.  I did not vomit because I only ate a few. I felt really guilty and scared. They blamed me for suggesting we ate the seeds.

Luckily, one of the grown-ups told us to drink coconut milk to help get rid of the toxins. It worked, and everyone started feeling better after a while. It was a scary experience, but we learned to be more careful about what we eat.

Even though it was a tough lesson, it taught us to listen to adults and think twice before eating something we're not sure about.

My Sweet Potato Story (Kamote)

Looking back from the past, my family relied on farming sweet potatoes and cassava for additional income. We cultivated a portion of our land on a hill, where we planted sweet potato stems. It typically took 3 to 4 months and for cassava 9 months before it was ready to be harvested.

During the harvest season, I asked my brother to accompany me to gather some sweet potatoes. He brought along a bolo (a type of knife), and together we headed to the hill. Upon arrival, we noticed some sweet potatoes starting to sprout. I reached for the bolo he was carrying, intending to use it for harvesting. He resisted, but I was determined to take hold of it. In the struggle, I accidentally nicked his forehead with the bolo, causing it to bleed. Fearing his reaction, I hastily retreated home and hid inside a large bamboo basket to avoid facing my father's anger. Despite their efforts to find me, I remained silent and concealed within the basket for an hour. Surprisingly, when they eventually discovered me, my father didn't scold me as I had anticipated.

Whenever I encounter sweet potatoes, memories of the incident with my brother come flooding back. Although the scar on his forehead remains faintly visible to this day, he simply laughs whenever I recount the "sweet potato story."

As a child, one of my cherished memories was swimming in the river with my brother. We would splash around and enjoy ourselves in the cool water, completely immersed in our own world of fun and laughter.

One day, despite the gloomy weather, we ventured to the river's edge. The rain poured relentlessly, causing the water level to rise and the once clear river to turn muddy. Undeterred by the worsening conditions, we continued to play by the riverside, oblivious to the dangers lurking in the swiftly changing current.

As the rain persisted, our father's voice called out to us, urging us to come home. However, we ignored his calls, dismissing them as mere background noise in our excitement. Sensing his growing concern, we panicked and sought refuge in a nearby cave, hoping to evade his watchful gaze.

From our hiding spot, we watched anxiously as our father waded into the river, frantically searching for any sign of us. Despite his efforts, we remained silent, concealed by the darkness of the cave. Eventually, he gave up the search and sought help from our neighbors, leaving us to contemplate the consequences of our actions.

When he left, we emerged from our hiding place and hurried home, eager to escape any punishment that awaited us. Quickly changing our clothes and pretending exhaustion, we lay down on the mat in our room, simulating sleep upon our father's return.

Thankfully, our ploy worked, and we were spared from facing the consequences of our disobedience. As we drifted off to sleep, we couldn't help but feel grateful for our narrow escape and vowed to be more mindful of our father's warnings in the future.
